About the project

Lifting Hands International is a humanitarian non-profit dedicated to providing help for refugees, both home and abroad. At the LHI Refugee Centre, the full-time volunteer team provides vital services and activities for a camp of 1000+ Yazidi refugees in Northern Greece, such as trauma-informed dance and yoga, English and German classes, recreational activities, weekly fresh produce and hygiene distribution, and seasonal clothing distribution.

What will I be doing?

You will work with Yazidi refugees, mostly from northern Iraq. In the LHI Community Centre, which is 200m from the camp. The project offers various programs and services of psychological support. Depending on your skills, experiences and personal preferences, you will either help with the following programmes:

  • Educational program (teaching English, Greek or German)
  • Music
  • Yoga, fitness and dance program
  • Social enterprise program

Or aid one of the following areas:

  • Children Friendly Space (CFS)
  • Female Friendly Space (FFS)
  • Community Garden
  • The warehouse.

Volunteers with unique skills and talents are welcomed on to the team and the project is open to volunteers hosting workshops and other creative opportunities for the camp residents.

What impact would I have?

Volunteers bring so much to the camp residents at the LHI Community Center. The team aims to support the refugee’s journey toward healing while offering opportunities for educational advancement. They also offer recreational programs which bring health and improve the quality of life. The camp residents often prefer to be at the Community Center than in the camp because, “Everyone is happy at the centre. Everyone is smiling, but in the camp, we are all sad.”

Who would I be working with?

You would be working with a team of volunteers of all ages, with different backgrounds from around the world. You may also work alongside one of the resident volunteers.
