Where is it?
About the project
Philoxenia is an action group initiated in the autumn of 2015 in response to the great amounts of people fleeing from war torn territories and seeking refuge in the European soil. The term philoxenia means “love for strangers” and highlights the true generosity of spirit. They strive to share this kindness of spirit among everyone forced to live in disadvantaged conditions, through the provision of warm meals and a comfortable space in stressful environments. Their aim is to restore a sense of humanity and instill a spark of kindness that people can carry with them throughout their journey.
What will I be doing?
Collecting supplies from local markets and advocating for local donations, preparing and cooking food for 250+ homeless people, distributing food and other items where possible in their community centre, keeping the centre clean and in working order.
What impact will I have?
You will be a part of the only collaborative team that provides basic services such as food, legal advice, and medical assistance to undocumented migrants in Greece’s second largest city. On top of this you will contribute to making a welcoming and safe environment for the whole city’s homeless population to shelter from the streets a few hours each day.
Who would I be working with ?
The local homeless population, refugees, migrants, people with precarious living arrangements and other volunteers. Their doors are open to anybody and everybody.
You will need to arrange accomodation for yourself.
Accommodation, travel expenses and food.
