I Have Rights
Free legal information and legal support for all asylum seekers and refugees on Samos.
I HAVE RIGHTS is a new non-profit organisation that emerged from the legal information project of Refugee Law Clinic Berlin on Samos. Our international team of lawyers, legal case workers, and interpreters provides asylum seekers in the EU “Hotspot” Samos with free legal information about the asylum procedure, supports them in reuniting with their families in the EU, and challenges Europe’s degrading treatment of people seeking refuge in front of the European Court of Human Rights. By exposing the systemic, degrading conditions asylum seekers in the Greek “hotspots” have to live in, our advocacy team works on putting pressure on stakeholders to achieve systemic change.

What will I be doing?
You may be supporting the legal work as a Legal Case Worker. This means you will be conducting individual sessions with our beneficiaries together with a second Legal Case Worker or with our Lawyer or Legal Coordinator. You will also be offering workshops on the asylum procedure to asylum seekers and to volunteers of other NGOs.
As a volunteer interpreter, you will support the legal team in communicating with the beneficiaries during appointments and workshops and via messages.
As an advocacy volunteer, you will be working together with an on-site and remote team on communicating on social media and in reports about the situation on Samos. What impact would I have?
The asylum procedure is complex, so we offer individualised information to give asylum seekers a more detailed overview regarding the stage of the procedure in which they find themselves. Being prepared for the next steps of the procedure and understanding their situation is crucial for the outcome of the asylum process.
We believe that this reality is not in accordance with the rights and freedoms that European states are bound to guarantee for everyone within their jurisdiction. Yet, asylum seekers do not have the means to access justice since legal counselling and representation are limited by practical or administrative barriers. I HAVE RIGHTS is our answer to this intolerable reality and intends to reach beyond these limitations. Join our efforts by volunteering with us.Who will I be working with?
You will be working alongside our Lawyer and Legal Coordinator who are staying on Samos long-term. You will then be working with other volunteer legal case workers, interpreters, and advocacy volunteers. Our team on Samos is supported by additional volunteers who are based remotely.
